J-PAL in Indonesia

The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a leading research institute based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. It serves as a focal point for development and poverty research based on randomized trials. J-PAL works with NGOs, international organizations, government institutions and others to evaluate programs and disseminate the results of high quality research. J-PAL’s work includes projects in over 15 countries. Check out some of J-PAL projects currently underway in Indonesia:

Combatting Corruption in Community Development

Political Institutions and Local Public Goods

Conditional Community Cash Transfers

J-PAL is forming a new initiative in Indonesia in partnership with the World Bank, with two main purposes:

  • Developing a set of randomized trials in Indonesia, with a particular emphasis on governance and development issues. Current work in this area includes evaluating alternative schemes for targeting poor households, reducing corruption in teacher certification, and using incentives to improve traffic enforcement.
  • Building the capacity of Indonesians to undertake randomized trials. J-PAL is offering junior and senior fellowships for Indonesians to work side-by-side with international J-PAL researchers in developing and implementing J-PAL’s randomized trials in Indonesia. J-PAL is also conducting its executive education class on randomized evaluations in Indonesia.

As a part of the initiative, two opportunities are being offered in Indonesia:

1. J-PAL Indonesia Training Course on “Evaluating Social Programs”

J-PAL is organizing a 5-day intensive training course from June 23rd to June 27th, 2008 in Denpasar, Indonesia. This course will be taught by world renowned researchers from MIT, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and New York University with extensive experience in randomized evaluation. The course is designed to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and training to scientifically evaluate the impact of development programs in developing countries, with a focus on the use of randomized evaluations. 2. J-PAL Indonesia Research Fellowships, 2008-2009

J-PAL is offering four year-long research fellowships for the year 2008-2009, including two half-time senior fellowships open to academics and researchers at universities, and policy and research institutions and two full-time junior fellowships for young researchers in Indonesia. The fellowships will provide a rare opportunity for researchers to participate directly in rigorous academic research related to governance and development in Indonesia.
