Africa Program for Education Impact Evaluation

In June, the Africa region of the World Bank launched is Africa Program for Education Impact Evaluation (APEIE) in Abuja, Nigeria with the objective of improving the ability of countries in the region to meet the Millennium Development Goals in education. Rigorous evidence about what works is the key driver of improved educational outcomes under this program.

APEIE partnered with J-PAL for the launch of this program which saw teams from eleven countries across the region learn the techniques of rigorous evaluation and brainstorm ideas for potential evaluations.

The APEIE program is designed to strengthen the education sector plans supported under the Education For All Fast Track Initiative and is a collaboration of the Human Development Department in the World Bank’s Africa Region and the Africa Region Results and Learning team. The program will strengthen technical capacity in the education sector to implement rigorous evaluations, build cross country evidence about what works in education, and promote cross country learning.

Members from each country team attending the APEIE launch participated in the J-PAL training course on randomized evaluations. Several members of J-PAL then helped facilitate the design of rigorous evaluations that could help strengthen the effectiveness of education sector plans.
